The author of two books of vignettes about hockey, Miller also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998, The Kings presented Miller a “lifetime contract” and named their arena press box in his honor. Salinas will be named “Broadcast Legend” at the gala awards dinner, set for Jan. 24th at the Universal Hilton Hotel. She has co-anchored the national Spanish-language newscast Noticiero Univision since 1987. She also hosts the primetime newsmagazine show Aqui y Ahora beamed to television stations in the U.S. and many Latin American countries.
She has covered a broad swath of stories during her storied career, including coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial in Los Angeles, overseas visits by Popes, the Olympic Park bombings in Atlanta, the funeral of Princess Diana,, interviews with several American presidents, and on-the-scene reports from war-torn Baghdad. Salinas’ autobiography in Spanish made several best-sellers lists, and she writes a syndicated column for over 50 Spanish and English publications. She has been called “the voice of Hispanic America” by the New York Times.
The Golden Mike Awards are presented each year by the Radio & Television News Assn., a nonprofit organization representing broadcast news professionals throughout Southern California. RTNA coordinates TV “pool coverage” of major news events in four Southland counties and champions press access and freedom of information causes, as well as providing university scholarships for the next generation of broadcast journalists.
