7/27-David Fleming, Daymond Rice

David W. Fleming  - Founding Chair  Biz Fed
David W. Fleming, an attorney with Latham & Watkins, was the instigator of the successful charter reform movement in the City of Los Angeles. In 1997, he and then LA Mayor Richard Riordan co-chaired a voters' initiative to reform LA City government, culminating in creation of an elected citizens' Charter Reform Commission that drafted a new charter adopted by voters in 1999. He currently serves on the board of the Southern California Metropolitan Water District, covering all of Southern California, representing the City of Los Angeles.  In 2003 he was appointed by President George W. Bush as a trustee of the James Madison Foundation, which bestows scholarships on high school teachers to promote teaching the founding of our nation. In 2005, he was appointed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to represent the city of Los Angeles as a director of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (the “MTA”).   Fleming chaired the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and in 2008 and was the creator and founding chair of the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed), an organization of 72 chambers of commerce and trade groups with well over 100,000 business members, employing 2 million workers throughout LA County. He is the current Chair of L.A. Project Grad, an intensive K-12 educational program helping minority public school students achieve excellence.

Daymond Rice-Chair of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association
I am both excited and honored to serve as Chairman of the Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA), especially as we celebrate 60 years of advocacy on behalf of the business community. Since its creation in 1949, VICA has given Valley businesses a voice at all levels of government.

My position as the public policy director for a large corporation and husband of a small business owner, has given me a unique perspective of the business climate in California. VICA’s aggressive, but balanced, advocacy efforts on behalf of the business community help make the environment better for businesses of all sizes.

VICA’s consistent and strong presence at the State Capitol, L.A. City Hall, on Capitol Hill ensures that the concerns of businesses across the region are heard by officeholders.

We hope you will work with us as we fight for job creation, responsible regulation, lower business taxes and the San Fernando Valley’s fair share of services and resources. VICA plans to tackle pressing business issues in the upcoming year, and the current economic climate will make the battle even harder.

The more businesses that invest in VICA the stronger our advocacy efforts can be. Please share your policy concerns and business needs with VICA so that we can carry your message to lawmakers at all levels of government.

Richard Sterban-Oak Ridge Boys

ENTERTAINER • ANNOUNCER • ATHLETIC TEAM OWNER

Richard began his singing career as a six-year-old soprano in Sunday school in his native Camden, New Jersey. He was a tenor in the glee club in seventh grade, but when he returned in the fall for eighth grade, he was a bass!

He loved sports and music, decided he had more talent for the latter, and developed a simple goal: “I wanted to be in the best vocal group in the world.” Before joining the Oaks in 1972, Richard sang in various groups, most notably backing Elvis Presley as a member of The Stamps Quartet.

Baseball has also been a longtime passion. For many years he has been an owner of the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers AAA club), attending spring training, even taking bus trips with the team.

His well-tailored clothing reveals one of his other loves.

“When I was singing part-time and working in a clothing store,” Richard recalls, “I developed a real interest in fashion, and it’s something that has carried through.”

Richard enjoys fine restaurants, collecting wine, and traveling — particularly to the seashore, where he likes sailing and snorkeling. A fitness buff, he has a bicycle at home and keeps another stowed in a bay under the tour bus. He even has a case so he can check a bicycle aboard airplanes.

Because of his longstanding interest in weather (he enjoys watching the Weather Channel!), Richard recently recorded public service announcements for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio network, the “voice” of the National Weather Service. Richard is also the “voice” for the Classic Country channel on Sirius Satellite Radio.

He and his wife Donna have two daughters living at home, Lauren and Tori. He also has three older sons, Rich, Doug and Chris, as well as six grandchildren.

7/13-Maury Wills, Dave Fleming

The memory of Maury Wills achieving his 104th stolen base for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1962 evokes images of an athlete extraordinaire. This outstanding achievement is only one in a long list of accomplishments that give insight into a man who is both an important athlete and a true sports personality.

On September 23, 1962 Wills broke Ty Cobb's record of 97 stolen bases in one year. At the time, it was almost inconceivable that the century mark could be broken, but that's exactly what Wills did. By season's end with his record 104 stolen bases, Wills set a new major league record. Wills went on to lead the National League in stolen bases for six straight seasons, from 1960-1965, and has a lifetime total of 585 stolen bases. Wills was also a major force on the winning L.A. Dodger team for 14 years and helped lead the Dodgers to three World Series victories in 1959 (his first year wearing the Dodger cap), 1963, and 1965. In addition, he also guided the Dodgers to a National League pennant victory in 1966.
