07/31 Sweet Dick Whittington

Sweet Dick Whittington Joins Michael Horn on The Weekend Edition of The PM Show!

Sweet Dick Whittington (born 1934) is a long-time disc jockey in Los Angeles, who has also appeared as an actor in movies and on television.

Prior to his arrival in Southern California, Whittington was a popular radio personality in the San Francisco Bay area at Oakland's KROW (960 AM), where he hosted the "Night Watchman" overnight program, and, later, a weekday afternoon show, from 1955 to 1958. In the fall of 1958, he moved to KSFO (560 AM) in San Francisco, as host of the 9 p.m. to midnight program. He began his stint in Los Angeles at KABC 790 AM, doing a one-hour talk show weekdays and a 3-hour Sunday talk show from 1965-1969. In 1969, he moved to KGIL.

His greatest fame in the Los Angeles market was in the morning drive time slot at KGIL AM 1260 in the "Sin Fernando Valley". For a brief time, he left KGIL to do the evening drive time slot at KFI AM 640. He also was briefly heard in the late 1980s on KIEV (870 AM) and, for a few months in 1989, was back at KABC AM. According to the entry in www.laradio.com, he has retired and is writing a novel.

Many people regard his broadcast style as being ahead of its time. Rather than the "happy morning to you" type of radio personality, he often spoke on the air about things that bothered him and foreshadowed the Howard Stern era of speaking your mind. At stations where he was still spinning records, he would many times interrupt a song midway through saying, "I like it up to that point, then I get bored."

One of Whittington's notable film roles was as the disc jockey in the TV movie Duel, Steven Spielberg's directorial debut. He can also be seen briefly as a ring announcer in Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull.

He now lives in the San Luis Obispo area and is the image voice for radio station KKJL-AM (adult standards).

07/06 WINK MARTINDALE

THE LEGENDARY WINK MARTINDALE

Winston Conrad "Wink" Martindale (born December 4, 1934) is an American disc jockey and television game show host. In his six decade career, he is best known for hosting Tic Tac Dough from 1978 to 1985, for hosting Gambit from 1972 to 1976, and again from 1980 to 1981 (also known as Las Vegas Gambit) and Debt, from 1996 to 1998.

In the history of TV game shows, no name is more synonymous with “host” than Wink Martindale – the man who has guided 19 broadcast network, national cable and syndicated TV games. He has hosted more game shows than anyone except Bill Cullen. But Wink’s years in broadcasting encompass more than his hit TV game shows. Before TV, there was radio. before the games, there was a Gold Record! And along with “host” there have been many producer credits as well. Winston C. Martindale – nicknamed “Wink” by a neighborhood pal – was born and raised in Jackson, Tennessee – the only member of his family of seven to be in broadcasting. “I guess I broke the mold” he laughs. “I think that I was born with a desire to be a radio announcer. I always had that great desire to sit behind a microphone. My first “mike” was two paper cups attached to a string. It wasn’t long before he was sitting behind the real thing. After years of pestering his Sunday School teacher – who happened to manage one of the local radio stations- Wink auditioned for WPLI at age 17. He got the job just three months before graduating from Jackson High School. “They gave me a job at $25 per week and for that you were expected to do everything”, he says. “You read commercials, the news , play-by-play high school football and basketball~~and you played records. If the floor needed sweeping, you did that too!” Over the next two years, Wink graduated to ever larger stations in Jackson and eventually to the station of his dreams – WHBQ in Memphis, which he listened to as a teenager. He hosted the station’s popular “Clockwatchers” morning show while attaining a Bachelor of Science degree from Memphis State University (now University of Memphis). Just months after landing the radio job WHBQ-TV signed on the air and Wink became a popular local television personality as well. His success in Memphis led to Los Angeles where he hosted radio and television programs for KHJ. At the same time, Wink’s career took an unexpected turn. Dot Records President, Randy Wood tapped him to record a pop version of a previous hit country narrative – “Deck of Cards”. The recording shot to the top of the charts, earned Gold Record status and an appearance by Wink on the “Ed Sullivan Show”. After years of carving out a place for himself as one of the most popular air personalities in Los Angeles – including twelve years as mi-day Host on Gene Autry’s 50,000 Watt flagship KMPC Wink felt a change was due. “I had been a deejay since I was 17″, he says. “My roots were in radio, but I thought it would be fun to try my hand hosting a television game. I’d become addicted to Allen Ludden’s popular show, “Password”. After hosting a local version of “What’s This Song”, a musical show featuring celebrities, NBC added it to its daytime lineup”. Wink had found his niche. In the years since “What’s This Song”, Wink has hosted an impressive array of shows, including: “Tic-Tac-Dough”, “Trivial Pursuit”, “Can You Top This?”, “Gambit”, “High Rollers” and “Debt”. He also produced the syndicated “Headline Chasers” in association with Merv Griffin and King World. He and his late partner, Bill Hillier were the first to produce real-time interactive game shows for the Family Channel that included “Boggle, “Jumble” and others. In June of , Wink was honored with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in Wink was among the first group of inductees to the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. Wink shows no sign of slowing his pace. For tow years he served as the national spokesperson for Orbitz travel on both radio and television. Rcently, he published his autobiography “Winking At Life”. When not working, Wink lives in Calabasas, CA with Sandy, his wife of 37 years and their two Chihuahuas, Little Dude and Olivia.

07/03 DAVID S. ARTHUR, SHAYTAN–A JOURNEY INTO EVIL, DR. JOHN GAMBLE, NO BULL INFORMATION

DAVID S. ARTHUR – AUTHOR, SHAYTAN–A JOURNEY INTO EVIL

In Book Two of the Quizzenbury Adventure Series, SHAYTAN–A JOURNEY INTO EVIL, Good and Evil Wage War in the Indian Jungle

India – 1947. In the heart of the jungle, death stalks the night. The authorities claim it is a man-eating leopard. The natives believe it is something far more terrifying—a creature that by day wears the skin of a man, but when craving human flesh becomes the demon…SHAYTAN! While on expedition to India, historical sleuth Richard Quizzenbury and his wife, Emily, suddenly find themselves on the hunt for a killer.

For his action-packed new thriller, SHAYTAN–A JOURNEY INTO EVIL, Santa Fe novelist David S. Arthur combines adventure, mysticism, and history to transport his readers into a world in which time marches to the pulse of the cosmos; where the spiritual and the supernatural merge and reality shares equal footing with illusion.

Fans of SHAYTAN–A JOURNEY INTO EVIL are already expressing excitement and fascination for the new book, among them Tom Wright, prominent American film and television director (NCIS, Supernatural, Castle). “Man you really get into it! The cobra scene scared the @#$% out of me. This is Spielberg on steroids.”

Seeking relief from the devastation of post-war Britain, Richard and Emily Quizzenbury embark on a tour of India.  They plan to initially spend a week in Bombay with Richard’s old Oxford chum, Victor Bloodworth, after which they will satisfy their appetite for adventure by exploring historical sites throughout the Indian subcontinent.

On their first night in Bombay, Victor informs the Quizzenburys that he has been asked to undertake the hunt for a man-eating leopard that has been terrorizing the inhabitants in a remote
area of the Indian Central Provinces. Victor is the illegitimate son of a wealthy Englishman, now deceased, who was by trade a legendary big game hunter. While Victor has long since rejected his father’s brutal profession, he is himself a skilled hunter and reveals his intent to help the people who are being threatened by the leopard. Although the villagers of the region believe the man-eater is a demon that they call Shaytan, Victor is convinced the leopard is actually being forced to prey on humans due to injury or old age. He wants to capture the animal alive and relocate it to a zoo for scientific study.

Quite unexpectedly, Victor invites the Quizzenburys to accompany him on the hunt, explaining that his uncle and spiritual mentor, Ashok Kahn of the Forest Guard, will join them as an expert Shikari guide. The Quizzenburys reluctantly agree, hoping Victor will be able to capture the beast as quickly as he anticipates, so they can be free to pursue their travels. However, the hunt for the leopard soon escalates into a terrifying struggle for survival during which many innocent lives are lost, as the hunters – and the Quizzenburys – become the hunted.

“Shaytan is far more than just a jungle adventure,” Arthur insists. “It is about the ageless conflict between good and evil, the ruthless march of empires, the rise of the world’s great religions, the discovery of the New World, the laying of this century’s geo-political foundations, and the establishment of hostilities that are today’s headlines. And India was the epicenter of it all.”

According to Arthur, for Richard Quizzenbury – who is never without his books – the expedition becomes a quest for truth, which is his passion – the truth about history and religion and science – the truth behind our darkest nature as a species and our most primal fears and beliefs.

“For Victor it is far more personal,” Arthur explains. “Victor is half English, half Indian – with a Hindu background. He is haunted by the memory of his mother’s murder when he was a child, his father’s apathy toward him growing up, his bi-racial heritage and his uncertainty about his faith. His Uncle Ashok’s presence brings these conflicts to the fore.  Through their daily prayers and rituals invoking the ancient gods to guide and assist them, Victor’s search for personal redemption transcends the hunt; plunging him into the arcane realm of Vedic (Hindu) mysticism, in which the Hindu deities play a deciding hand in his life or death battle  against the beast.”

As a writer, Arthur enjoys peeling back the layers of history, digging up the past, searching for answers to ancient riddles. “My intention is to entertain by taking my readers to exotic places they may never go and revealing things they might never know. In short, I write for the thrill of discovery, and I want my readers to share that experience.”

DR. JOHN GAMBLE – AUTHOR, NO BULL INFORMATION: A HUMOROUS PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HELP AMERICANS ADAPT TO THE INFORMATION AGE

NO BULL INFORMATION Teaches Readers to Manage Today’s Information Overload by Changing Their Thinking

In his new book, NO BULL INFORMATION, Dr. John Gamble challenges readers to confront the Information Age by abandoning simplistic thinking and taking a measured approach that requires asking questions to analyze and understand complicated issues, to identify and avoid word traps, and to effectively dissect and comprehend numbers frequently used to confuse voters and consumers.

Gamble uses humor and a wise cartoon character, Arnbi, to guide the reader through the maze of political doublespeak, expert-celebrity pitches of products, and healthcare options, among other issues.

With a focus on helping Americans to become better prepared to deal with the massive amounts of information that they face on a daily basis, NO BULL INFORMATION (NBI) instructs readers in developing “a new type of literacy.” NBI seeks to create an educated citizenry that can sift through information, identify the facts, and determine the best way to manage those facts. Gamble asserts that the super citizens who accept the challenge of NBI will make better decisions, which will lead to a reduction in financial disasters and government inefficiency.

Gamble’s cartoon sidekick, Arnbi, supports the NBI movement by offering targeted advice that summarizes many of the key principles outlined in NO BULL INFORMATION, including:

  • Too bad, but “simple” is a square peg that seldom fits into the round hole that is our modern world.
  • Facts are necessary but they must be put into context (PUTFiC).
  • Vested interests are everywhere—recognize them.

Breaking down words and numbers is the foundation of NBI. In one section of the book, Gamble walks the reader through a basic lesson in understanding percentages and statistics. “You need to understand numbers enough not to be deceived.” In one intriguing illustration, Gamble compares the Pentagon’s budget of $700 billion to a two-liter bottle and a proposed $20 million in spending to one drop of water from an eyedropper placed in that bottle. “It is a helpful strategy for understanding large numbers that are thrown at us every day by politicians and salespeople.”

Stressing the necessity of analytical thinking, Gamble explores the use of words in “bull-laden” information and the need to guard against what the author calls “landmine words and phrases”; for example, quite frankly, my good friend, clinical studies prove, award winning, and as seen on TV.

Gamble uses guidance survey and focus cards to demonstrate how readers can practice NBI in their daily lives. The cards cover nine areas each (Survey cards: sampling, word warnings, vested interests, etc. Focus cards: infomercials, supermarkets, credit, etc.). The cards include questions that help the reader to analyze a particular situation (buying a new cell phone, for example) and offer guidance for making decisions.

“I have been a college professor for more than thirty years. I am convinced that there are serious problems with the way information is presented and understood,” Gamble says. “This affects all Americans. I am writing for and to them.”

The idea for NO BULL INFORMATION came to Gamble about ten years ago as he observed the difficulty his Penn State undergraduate students were having adjusting to the Information Age. “NBI was inspired by hundreds of students in scores of classes I have taught. It was an iterative process: a class inspired an idea for NBI that I took back to class to test before including it in the book.” Gamble believes that people who read NO BULL INFORMATION will “gain a sense of empowerment, like a life preserver when we feel we are drowning in a mass of information.”

About the Author
Dr. John Gamble is Distinguished Professor of Political Science and International Law at Penn State’s Behrend College in Erie and Director of Honors Programs. He is the author of approximately 100 publications and recently won Penn State’s most prestigious award for teaching, the Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Dr. Gamble has stuttered all of his life. As a result, he believes words are precious and should not be taken for granted; this motivated him to write NO BULL INFORMATION. His dream for the book is that parents and grandparents will teach their children and grandchildren NBI techniques and demand clear, concise information from political leaders and service and product providers.
